    WinRK Live!

Today I receive message from Malcolm's robot:

    Hi All,

It has been some time since the last time we produced a newsletter, but today I have some great news to tell you!

M Software has a new home! You can find us now at:

    http://www.msoftware.biz

Please feel free to browse the new site, and I encourage you to give us your thoughts!

Along with the new website, we are releasing version 3.1.1 of WinRK (finally!). This can be downloaded for both the Win32 and the Win64 platforms from the new site.

    Enjoy!

    Thanks,
    Malcolm

Hmm nice. i never really had tried WinRK.

i like that fact that there are compression/decompression speed info on the profiles.

Again, nice but very buggy. Just during regular usage in one minute I have found many bugs. Does Malcolm tested WinRK at least once?

Nice! I like how compression profiles' speeds are altered according to internal benchmark results. But even with 1,5 GB free RAM I'm unable to work with any PWCM profile due to memory allocation failures.
I am... Black_Fox... my discontinued benchmark
"No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough for all time? I keep bumping into that silly quotation attributed to me that says 640K of memory is enough. There's never a citation; the quotation just floats like a rumor, repeated again and again." -- Bill Gates

I really like to hear that winrk is alive. But, again it comes with lots of bugs. Also, I really hate the compatibility problems. For example, malcolm has changed the audio model in direction of incompatibility. For me, all of winrk versions are still in alpha stage. Not even beta

    Unhappy Disappointing!!

Good to see WinRK is still under development.

Eventually found the new WinRK website after extensive searching!

Disappointing that a redirection to the new website from the old website was/is not implemented. This makes it difficult for anyone to find the new website.

WinRK 311 appears to have some bugs. Some bugs are mentioned on the new website blog, but there have not been any responses from Malcolm regarding these!?

Unfortunately, Malcolm either doesn't respond to comments, or it takes quite awhile before he responds. This was the same problem in his previous website forum also. So people don't know if Malcolm has even read the comments, or if he has, what he is doing about them!?

I purchased WinRK awhile ago, and I would have expected better customer service with more proactive feedback. Not a happy customer here!

    WinRK v3.1.1 WAV decompression fails

While playing a bit with WinRK v3.1.1 (32bit), I noticed it fails to extract all compressed WAV-files I've tested.
    The error I get when testing/extracting :
    Code:
Error extracting '' - (.\compression\ArithmeticDecoder.cpp:45) Error in data stream, unable to complete decoding
    Checked 0/1 files.
    Finished - elapsed time: 0h 00m 00.01s
I've tried it on a bunch of PCM 44kHz 2*16 wav files, but all failed when trying to extract. (tried all modes Fastest, Normal, except the slowest).

Previous WinRK v3.0.3 checked out ok.
Could anyone try to reproduce this error ?
I just want to make sure it's not caused by my setup.
    Thanks !

--edit : all non-wav files seem also to check out OK.

    system : Vista Prem. (32bit) / 4GB RAM

This bug has been confirmed by Malcolm (author WinRK) :

    Re: Audio decode issue
Posted by Malcolm on Sun, 08/24/2008 - 21:11.

I?ve fixed this issue for the next point release. The issue means that currently WinRK v3.1.1 will not decode stereo audio files correctly, since the decoder was ignoring the stereo flag. There is no problem however with the encoded file.

    Malcolm
This makes me also wonder about the tests at http://www.squeezechart.com/main.html .
It seems that Stephan didn't verify the archives !
WinRK v3.1.1 (nr. 1 in his tests !) isn't lossless, but rather a lossy archiver !

    WinRK audio issue

    dear pat357,

decompression tests are still in queue for WinRK 3.1.1; some other issues of that version have been reported to the author, but since WinRK is not of normal or higher priority by the author, there may be months of delay until fixes are published. I can verify the audio is not decompressable which disqualifies WinRK of course. Thanks for reporting.

    Regards,

    Stephan

I haven't seen any in CCM... PAQ8 does have them, as well as NanoZip, but does CCM have it?

If FF doesn't work, try IE (IE worked for me while FF didn't work))
