WinZip used to make shit loads in commercial licensing back in the 90s/early 2ks ;p to business anyways, i can't recall a single place i worked at then that didn't have it installed as default on all machines, although granted most never paid for it.
If you want to make money writing data compression software, then open source it and give it away. It is your skills that you are selling. (Speaking from experience).
