    LZSS + Huffman?

    Good morning all,

Back when LZSS + Huffman was a common compression form in archivers, I was not very interested in compression yet.

Doing quick research, it seems like LHARK was the best at making LZH files.

I read an interesting page about Joe Jared's Huffman Compression Engine and his ideas for making algorithms beyond LH7 (e.g. lh8, lha, lhb, lhc, lhe) which used bigger dictionary sizes. Did anyone ever implement these ideas into an archiver/file comrpessor?

I know that when deflate became popular, naturally people moved away from LZSS + Huffman as an idea for compression.

Was LHARK really the best? Or is there anything newer that uses LZSS + Huffman that achieves a better ratio?
