I am curious about what is considered the state of the art currently for lossless texture compression ?
Or lossy ? Is this an active area of research ?
I've found some excellent libraries such as

With the advent of VR/AR, and critical need to lower latency, it looks like texture compression
is the perfect solution. With a second layer of lossy or lossless compression to speed up network
transfer, and PCI transfer to video card.
