State of the art for texture compression ?

I am curious about what is considered the state of the art currently for lossless texture compression ?
Or lossy ? Is this an active area of research ?

I've found some excellent libraries such as

https://github.com/BinomialLLC/crunch (doesn't seem to be active any longer)
    https://github.com/GammaUNC/GST

With the advent of VR/AR, and critical need to lower latency, it looks like texture compression
is the perfect solution. With a second layer of lossy or lossless compression to speed up network
transfer, and PCI transfer to video card.

    Another useful libs:

https://github.com/google/etc2comp - very fast compressor for ETC2 (hw format for mobile GPUs), article about it: https://medium.com/@duhroach/buildin...r-307f3e9aad99

https://github.com/GameTechDev/ISPCTextureCompressor - BC6H, BC7 (hw formats for desktop GPUs), ASTC

And Binomial people work on commercial compressor, there are some interesting posts on their blog: http://www.binomial.info/blog/?category=Compressor

Thanks.. can anybody please provide compiled windows binaries of etc2comp, ISPCTextureCompressor and GST?

I want to create a benchmark of compressing textures.
Which open and free files do you suggest to build a testset?
And which formats do you favor?

Great idea. I was going to suggest the kodak test set, but it looks like it is offline.

    You could try these images:

I've created a curated list of interesting/active texture compression projects on this GitHub organization:

    https://github.com/GrokTexture

Let me know if I am missing anything.

I wonder if these various projects could be combined into one single transcoder .......
