    CoffeeArc

    Hello everyone,

    I just stumbled upon that one on maximumcompression.com's guestbook:
    Hi,

    I wrote a generic open source archiver that can easily be used with almost any command-line file compression tool.
    I hope you can put it to good use (e.g. to test tools or add more usability to it).

    Hello everyone,

    just for the record, I tested (briefly) CoffeeArc with these settings (only copied arc.exe and arc.ini to CoffeeArc's profiles directory):
    Code:
    <profile name = "FreeArc" version="26.03.09">

    	<description>------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                FreeArc 26.03.09 - Copyright (C) Bulat Ziganshin
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    FreeArc is an OpenSource file compressor by Bulat Ziganshin:

    	</description>

    	<gui name="Kompression" type="combo">
    		<option label="Maximum">
    			<replace key="%model" with="-m9x"/>
    		</option>
    		<option label="Normal" default="yes">
    			<replace key="%model" with="-m4 -s64m"/>
    		</option>
    		<option label="Hoch">
    			<replace key="%model" with="-m5 -s128m"/>
    		</option>
    		<option label="Schnell">

    		</option>
    		<option label="HDD-Geschwindigkeit">
    			<replace key="%model" with="-m1 -s8m"/>
    		</option>
    		<option label="Keine Kompression">
    			<replace key="%model" with="-m0"/>
    		</option>
    	</gui>

    	<solid/>

    	<skip>zip,rar,tar.gz,7z</skip>

    	<checksum/>

    	<encode file="arc" params="a %model %out %in">
    		<decode params="x %in %out"></decode>
    	</encode>

    </profile>
    These are the results:
    Code:
    7z466a [directory] -> 2,96 MB (3.110.153 Bytes) (unpacked 7z466a.exe)
    7z466a-max -> 921 KB (943.322 Bytes)
    7z466a-normal.crc -> 935 KB (957.774 Bytes)
    7z466a-veryfast -> 1,08 MB (1.137.257 Bytes)
    7z466a-none -> 2,98 MB (3.127.599 Bytes)

    New version

    Hi,

    nice to see that it works. I just released a new version (0.52a) which now supports pipes. That means lesser temporary files for those tools that can read/write from/to the system streams. The profiles for CCM and a modified version of Slug X are already adjusted.
    After creating an archive, some compression timings are now displayed.

    And, I relocated the project to http://forge.simplana.de/projects/show/coffeearc

    Pretty nice program, indeed.

    It takes almost zero effort to get from a command-line file archiver to a more feature-rich GUI. I'm inclined to use it as default GUI for my own binaries.

    I wonder if the author reads this forum sometimes, and if it is authorised to suggest some features...

    Hi,

    thanks for the feedback! Feature requests and bug reports are of course always welcome. From time to time I follow the posts in this forum, but it would be nice to have these things on the project site.

    Hi all,

    for the more intensive discussions I added a developers forum at http://forge.simplana.de/projects/show/coffeearc

    But as I said, I sometimes check here and for the little things you don't want to register - feel free to post where you want

    @Cyan: I just tested lzp2 (Apr 23 2009) with CoffeeArc (0.53 and 0.55) and had trouble uncompressing an archive ("File ... is not a LZP2 archive!"). My system is a Athlon X2, 2GB ram, Vista 32. Any ideas?

    This is most probably a bug in the decoder of the version bundled with CoffeeArc, as opposed to the version downloadable as a command-line only tool.
    I will track down the issue, and make you aware of the result.

    Thanks Andreas

    It seems performance has also improved quite a lot since last version, as there is no more "large preparation delay" noticeable.
    (or maybe it is OS change from XP to Seven...).

    Integration with external file-only command-line compressor is still a breathe thanks to xml import.

    minor suggestion : there are some nice report on time and speed at the end of compression process, but none regarding compression rate nor resulting compressed size. Is that complex to do ?

    Regards

    This should be no problem. This information is in fact already calculated but only displayed in the status line when you open the archive afterwards.

    I will consider this in the next release, thanks for the suggestion.
